Olympus VN-480-PC DIGTL VOICE REC ( 141725 ) Review

I just bought one of these .. why? .. becuase I had bought it's "little brother" .. a 16k version and loved it so much that I had to get one with more memory (this has 64k)

Contrary to the official Amazon discription .. the high quality recording time is almost 3 hours (2 hr and 57.5 min)

If you are interested in a digital voice recorder be sure to get one (like this) that can easily upload to your computer. Many units without a USB you have to connect the earphone jack to the mic in of your soundcard and play it back in 'real time' The USB transfer works great, and is fast .. the files are stored as .wav files but using 3rd party software you can burn them to a music CD or convert them to mp3 or whatever.

I recorded a meeting that was an hour and 5 min. The wav file was about 40meg.Using 3rd party software I made an mp3 about 14.5 meg. The sound quality (for voice) was really good at the high quality setting.

It also has a sound activation (commonly called VOX) feature that records only when it hears sound above a certain level. Also there is a TIMER RECORDING feature that will start recording at a specified time and length.

I'm a hypnotist/hypnotherapist, and I already owned a model WS-300 that I use for making CD's for my clients and recording sessions. I thought it was great, so I ordered this as a Christmas gift for a friend.Of course I opened it to check it out.The 300 has about 9 hours of HQ recording time and the WS-321M has much more.I liked the fact that the controls were a little easier to use, so I ordered another one for myself.The built in mic is OK for recording, but you'll get much more professional recordings using a plug in mic.I use a tie clip mono mic with a stereo adapter and the sound quality is GREAT.You can buy a stereo mic but at a hight cost.
Great product but prices vary widely.The first was around $58.00 and a week later that one was about $62.00, but I saw them as high as $139.00, shop around for the best price.All in all, its a great product with great sound quality and ease of use.You may also want to check my review of the WS-300.

Olympus (141985) 512MB Digital Voice Recorder (Model# VN-5000) Review

I thought I wanted a voice recorder a long time ago, while a student but I never actually bought one. If I remember correctly, I was deterred, back then, by the apparent mechanical complexity of the device, its using non-standard recording media - mini cassettes - the need to feed it batteries and its overall lack of versatility. I believe they used to be expensive too.

This is my first and voice recorder and it seems to address most of my issues back then. The Olympus VN-5000 DVR's notable features include:

- no moving parts other than the several buttons
- small
- long battery life
- no physical recording media needed other than its own physical memory
- moderately easy to learn controls
- 3 level of recording quality and, depending in the quality selected
- 20, 50 or 300 hours of recording time, depending on the selected recording quality
- voice activated recording
- variable playback speed
- date/time stamps on files
- some rudimentary file management (4 preset folders, files can be moved between folders)
- etc., etc.

Its main weakness is its not allowing for easy transfer of records files - see note at the bottom on how to do it 'the hard way'.

Overall, this model is a trade off between low price/simplicity and features/flexibility in favor of low price and simplicity. Being my fist DVR, I happen to like it this way but the more sophisticated or the more demanding users may not not appreciate its awkward file management and the fact that, at least in theory, it's impossible to get the files out of the device, into some other form of storage (but it can be done - see note below).

I am very pleased with this device. Between 4 and 5 stars, I decided on 4 because this inexpensive, 'entry level' gadget, while making recording easy, is not as good at managing and retrieving the information once recorded, especially when one stores many files.

Note:

If you want to transfer your files to a computer, it can be done but it can be a time-consuming process. To do so, you need to

- Install Audacity on your machine (it's a free download).
- Plug a microphone cable into your DVR's headphone slot and the other end into your computer's microphone interface - all computers should have these wires and you can use either the 'green' or the 'pink' one.
- Set Audacity on 'record' and you simply 'play' your file.
- Test for the proper volume setting before recording a long file.
- Save your recording as a WAV or MP3 file.

It's going to take as long as it took you to make the recording but, once it's done you have a file that you can do with as you please.

Remanufactured Olympus VN-480-PC Digital Voice Recorder Review

1. Olympus doesn't provide drivers online. Why not? It's not like they have any value if you haven't purchased the player already.

2. The VN series is evidently not compatible with Windows Vista. It won't let me reinstall the drivers.

3. The forced file hierarchy (A, B, C groups) is dumb and causes problems. Why can't I just plug it in and drag/drop your files in Windows Explorer?

4. When you speak, S's pop even when you're a couple of feet away.

I wish I had purchased another brand.

Olympus VN-120 Digital Voice Recorder Review

I have to admit that this is the first Digital Voice Recorder I've ever owned so I am not an experienced reviewer.I did some research prior to purchasing it and pretty much decided this was the one I would start with based on price and features.While I would have preferred one a bit smaller, I'm really happy with this recorder. I have a pretty small hand and it almost fits into my palm.It does everything I need it to do.It has three "folders".I use one for making quick reminders, etc (that will be deleted later) for myself, the second for gift ideas for others, and the third for secret shopping.

I've used all three of the quality settings and prefer to use the best one as it picks up GREAT even in noisy areas.That makes the time to record less, but I don't use it for lectures or anything like that and have yet to fill it up (even when my 7-year-old nephew got his hands on it and recorded himself singing songs and telling stories during a road trip).I think in a quiet classroom you should be able to still get pretty good quality on the medium setting and prolong the time some.

I got very lucky and found the very one I wanted, clearanced out at Target when they updated the packaging for this model, so I got it for an amazing price of $20.MORE than worth the price I paid.The only thing now is that now I REALLY would like to have the PC model that plugs into your computer (VN 240 PC) so you can save your recordings.Now that my niece and nephew have played with it, I want to save some of what they said to play for them when they "grow up".However, that model runs a bit more than I was prepared to pay, so for the money, this one is awesome.

I recommend this model if you are looking for an affordable but quality digital recorder that doesn't have to be "spy sized" or connect to your PC.I'm very happy with it myself.

I have used Olympus digital recorders for lo these many years now. They are reliable, ergonomic, capacious, and economic, with good sound quality. I have had several, and I record about 20 memos a day. They are hard to kill.
My only wish would be the built-n USB interface with the VN-1000 ergonomics. Maybe a flash card slot, as well.

Olympus VN-4100PC - Digital voice recorder - flash 256 MB - black, silver Review

I have 2 of these recorders they work exactly for my needs. I only wish it had a pocket clip so it wouldn't move around.

Some folks have experienced the ERR message after changing the batteries, here is the fix. Be aware it does erase all recordings to make this fix.

The ERR message can only be corrected by holding in the DISP/MENU and STOP buttons for two seconds, which results in ALL the material on the recorder being erased. It will say (FOR) for a few minutes while it is erasing everything, then will work again.

As an elementary music teacher, I often have a need to make recordings. After researching my options, on a limited budget, I chose this digital voice recorder to record my grand piano playing vocal parts. At first I was very disappointed, until told to listen through the ear buds, not the speakers on the tiny device! Olympus 1GB Digital Voice Recorder - White (WS-321M) Review

I bought this for my brother who is a musician and really wanted something to record and hear himself. He is also a college student and uses it for lecture notes. SO far he loves it. Olympus VN4100 Digital Voice Recorder Review

I've had the recorder for about a month and am very pleased with it. I've dropped it a few times and it's still working as it should. (After I dropped it the third time, I bought a neck strap so that I can now easily use it when driving, walking, etc.) I use it only for making mental notes/reminders. I have not used it to record lectures, etc. I use it about 15-30 minutes a day and the battery is still strong. I set up my four folders as follows: a: urgent/to be done today. b: To do (personal) c: To do (work); d; Tech stuff. The only thing I do not like is the color.

Olympus Premium Case - Case for digital voice recorder - black Review

This case is really great for the "Sony ICD-UX71 Digital Voice Recorder" (essentially a perfect fit). Almost all of the recorder's functions are easily accessible while in the case. The case provides a good level of protection, is of high quality, and looks nice. The case snaps/buttons shut at the bottom to cover the front of the recorder. The recorder is held in place by an elastic band at the case's top which approx rests in between the recorder's microphones and screen. The case has a good loop/belt clip on its back that buttons on its lower edge to the back of the case, but also has a second strip of material to keep the recorder on the belt even if the button comes undone. I added a smallish lanyard ("Olympus 202315 Adjustable Wrist Strap (Black)") to the voice recorder that hangs out while the recorder is in the case. Voice recorder is approx: 3-7/8"L x 1-1/4"W x 1/2"H. The case is approx: 4-1/4"L x 1-3/4"W x 1"H. Very satisfied. Highly recommended.

Olympus VN-4100PC Digital Voice Recorder Review

The Olympus VN-4100PC is an excellent value.It's perfect for tasks such as recording a lecture or meeting, making verbal to-do lists, practicing a speech or presentation, and so on.Some reviewers criticize it because it's not very good at recording music, and the play-back is monaural, and they're right.It's not really designed for professional-style, stereo recording.As is the case with all machines, you have to live within its design limits.

The VN-4100PC has some very nice features that make it an excellent value.It is shirt-picket small and very light weight.The controls are simple and intuitive enough that you can operate it out of the package, without even reading the instructions.(However, the instructions tell you how to perform important setup functions, so you should read them.)In short, it's a nice, small, light personal audio recorder.

The built-in microphone is actually pretty good, but if you leave the recorder in your pocket while you're recording, you'll get quite a bit of ambient noise.The same can happen if you prop it on a book.There are two ways to work around this limitation, which is inherent to all similar recorders.Either put the machine on something soft on the desk, such as a coat, or buy an external microphone.The external microphone is probably the best way to go; you'll get far superior electronics, and it's easy to clip or place the mic so you can avoid the ambient noise.

This certainly isn't a high-end, professional-grade recorder.It wasn't designed to be one.Rather, it's a convenient, low-cost personal recorder that does exactly what it's supposed to do.It's an excellent value for the money.I'm very happy I bought it, and I'd do it again.

When I bought my recorder in December, 2007, it cost about $50.That's why I called it an excellent value; the feature set at that price was unmatched by any competitive recorder.However, now it's up to $175.Wow!There's no way on earth I'd pay that much for it!For $175, it should be gold plated!

Olympus WS-321M Digital Voice Recorder and WMA Music Player Review

I have been using mini cassette recorders, digital voicepens, and PDAs to record lectures and my own thoughts for years. This one blows them all away, in terms of both usability and sound quality. It is my first Olympus, and it is clearly the product of generations of improvements they made. I have not bought a gadget in a long time that keeps giving me GOOD surprises instead of disappointments. Worries that a recording will be lost because the battery ran out during a recording are eliminated by the fact that: 1. there is a nice battery indicator that you can check before beginning. 2. It uses one AAA, which is easy to find anywhere, and easy to carry a spare. if you see the battery is low, just pause the recording, put it on Hold, and put in a new battery. 3. The battery lasts over 8 hours anyway. How many recordings require continuous 8 hours? That sure beats fumbling with the old 30-min minicassettes! The stereo internal mic is superb, even at the medium quality setting. The usability of the controls is excellent, and most functions can be done blind, without needing to look at tricky menus. At the highest quality setting, I still get quite a few hours of recordings onto the 1GB memory. And transferring talks and MP3s into and out of it is perfectly simple--slide off the battery compartment revealing a full-size USB, plug it into the computer, and it appears on the desktop as a removable disk (in Mac OS X). Drag & drop, unmount and yank, and go. They even included a little extension USB cable, in case the body of the recorder would bump into adjacent wires on your computer. You can put marks anywhere in a recording while recording or during playback. That makes it easy to find important places again. You can play back slowed or sped up by up to 50% (or less) to either blaze through a boring lecturer, or scrutinize one with complex concepts. You can lock the controls so you don't accidentally switch off during a recording, or switch it on in your pocket and waste the battery. The screen has a backlight for recording at dark performances or auditoriums, or playing back at night. I recommend getting an external mic if the noise of handling the buttons and the recorder is a problem. However, it does have very good "limiter" circuitry (ALC), reducing the volume of my fumbling and coughs so I don't blow my speakers out on playback. I am delighted how fast it activates using voice activation--Not a syllable is missed when set to 13-15. It does lose syllables if you have it set to "dictate" (low mic sensitivity) and voice activation, unless you put it right by your mouth. But on Conference (high mic sens.) it is just great. And the internal speaker is amazingly good--Loud and clear. Menus are intuitive, but they included a pretty good manual with it. Finally, it is very small and light, pocketable enough to be unobserved in your shirt pocket, but not so small as to be hard to operate the controls. Two design improvements I would make: put the mic and headphone jacks in two different places, and put the headphone jack away from the internal mics because rubbing the wire (if recording while wearing headphones) causes noise. This is about the only complaint I can think of. Amazing.

Olympus WS-500 Digital Voice Recorder (Blue) Review

I bought this as a backup to my other Olympus recorder (which I frequently lend out).My other recorder is an Olympus WS-100 which I bought 4 years ago.It was one of the first digital voice recorders ever made.It has served me well.

This unit contains a number of improvements over the WS-100 and the WS-400.

When I bought this, I was afraid I would have to carry around a USB cable with me.However, this unit has a little slide button on the side which extends a built-in USB connector.Plugging this into a USB port is a snap.

This unit is a little more compact than the WS-100.It also seems to solve the record delay which was a time vampire on the WS-400.This unit starts to record almost immediately on pressing the record button.

I would give this unit five stars except except the menu is almost indecipherable without spending an entire day memorizing and studying it.This means that you pretty much have to have the manual available for the first months you use this or you will not be able to use most of the features (unfortunately, this seems normal for most digital personal devices nowadays (except for Apple products)).

The arcane menu arrangement does not lend itself to quick and easy use of the unit if there are constant changes to your recording requirements unless you memorize the manual or have it available.

Other than that the plusses are that it supports Vista 64 bit, and, contains all of the features of the WS-400.The unit is easy to snap record conversations and other items.

It is a good buy at the price and easier to use, with all of the features, than any of the other small personal recorders I've looked at over the years by other manufacturers.

Olympus WS-110 WMA Digital Voice Recorder Review

I bought this recorder to record music.I am a cello major at college, and needed something at least to record lessons.I sorted through many recorders before buying this one, here's my advice:
~Look at the specifications; if you are buying an olympus recorder go to their website to look up the sampling frequency and other specs. For instance you'll find out that the sampling frequency is 44.1khz (cd quality) on hq mode
~Think about how much space you will need.For me, I will not be saving anything on that recorder; it will be moved quickly to the computer or my ipod so there was no point in buying more space on it.

My thoughts on the recorder so far:
~Good quality recording, almost cd quality.Works best of course with an external mic.

~I love the ease of use.The best thing, is that it works just like a usb device; you take the batter compartment off to reveal that in essence, this is a fancy usb stick.No additional software ... just drop it in the folder you want :)

Update: I've had this recorder for WELL over a year, and I love it.With the external mic and good placement of the device, I get high quality recordings.I use it most for my lessons, and it's both discreet and efficient.Would recommend highly to anyone.
