Olympus 2-hour Digital Voice Recorder with PC Interface VN-120PC Review

Olympus 2-hour Digital Voice Recorder with PC Interface VN-120PCI have 2 of these recorders and they work fine.
However since I upgraded my computer to Vista from Xp, I am not able to transfer the digital files from the recorder to my pc.

I have not been able to find any further driver info on the Olympus website. Email going to Olympus gets me an automated confirmation of receipt but never a followup answer.

Hopefully someday Olympus will come up with the Vista driver.

Olympus VN-120 Digital Voice Recorder Review

Olympus VN-120 Digital Voice RecorderI have to admit that this is the first Digital Voice Recorder I've ever owned so I am not an experienced reviewer.I did some research prior to purchasing it and pretty much decided this was the one I would start with based on price and features. While I would have preferred one a bit smaller, I'm really happy with this recorder. I have a pretty small hand and it almost fits into my palm.It does everything I need it to do.It has three "folders".I use one for making quick reminders, etc (that will be deleted later) for myself, the second for gift ideas for others, and the third for secret shopping.

I've used all three of the quality settings and prefer to use the best one as it picks up GREAT even in noisy areas. That makes the time to record less, but I don't use it for lectures or anything like that and have yet to fill it up (even when my 7-year-old nephew got his hands on it and recorded himself singing songs and telling stories during a road trip).I think in a quiet classroom you should be able to still get pretty good quality on the medium setting and prolong the time some.

I got very lucky and found the very one I wanted, clearanced out at Target when they updated the packaging for this model, so I got it for an amazing price of $20.MORE than worth the price I paid. The only thing now is that now I REALLY would like to have the PC model that plugs into your computer (VN 240 PC) so you can save your recordings. Now that my niece and nephew have played with it, I want to save some of what they said to play for them when they "grow up".However, that model runs a bit more than I was prepared to pay, so for the money, this one is awesome.

I recommend this model if you are looking for an affordable but quality digital recorder that doesn't have to be "spy sized" or connect to your PC.I'm very happy with it myself.

Olympus WS-310M 512 MB Digital Voice Recorder and Music Player Review

Olympus WS-310M 512 MB Digital Voice Recorder and Music PlayerEven though there are some GREAT features on this device, one of the main drawbacks is the microphone. It is located on the right and left sides of the recorder but there are holes for the microphone on the FRONT AND BACK. The recorder is far too thin to stand on end unless it's a perfectly level surface that doesn't move at all. Unless you want to sit there holding the recorder in your hand straight up (which is what I've been doing and don't mind), do NOT get this recorder. Laying it down on your desk or notebook puts the microphone holes in direct contact with your notebook or desk surface. Any sound you make on the desk will be picked up. Also, since it is laying down, half of the microphone is essentially covered, you will have a harder time recording the lecture. Another thing very much worth mentioning is the record time. The product description states that it can record up to 68 hours on LP. On this speed, you will not pick up anything unless you are speaking into the recorder with it mere inches from your face. I leave the recorder on its highest quality setting (HQ Stereo) at all times but I only get just under 9 hours of recording time.

With all that said, if you do hold the recorder up on end, it does record well and it is very easy to move files off the recorder and onto your computer. Despite its microphone difficulties I have decided to keep the recorder and I do use it to record all of my classes. I'm very pleased with it.

I cannot comment on its music playing abilities since I have not used it as a player.

Product Description:
Slim, attractive, and highly functional, the Olympus WS-310M digital voice recorder packs 512 MB of internal flash memory into its lightweight housing, letting you record up to 138 hours of high-quality audio in WMA format. It's ideal for recording notes or long lectures, interviewing sources for an upcoming story, or capturing spur-of-the-moment song ideas before they disappear into the air. As an added bonus, the WS-310M can store up to 130 WMA or MP3 songs for high-quality stereo playback, letting you listen to your favorite tunes between (or during) classes or while waiting in line at the DMV. All this in a tiny body that measures 1.5 inches wide by 3.73 inches tall--roughly the size of a pack of gum.
The WS-310M features five separate file folders capable of holding 199 files each, so you can organize nearly 1,000 files by subject, theme, or other categories. Users also have the choice of four recording modes: HQ, which minimizes background noise and is great for recording people with low speaking voices; LP and SP modes that offer extended recording times; and the unique Stereo HQ mode, which makes two-channel recordings. And thanks to the voice activation option, users don't need to press a single button to start recording. The WS-310M will instead record as soon as the built-in microphone picks up sound.
Perhaps the most convenient feature, however, is the built-in USB connector. To attach the WS-310M to a PC or Mac, all you need to do is remove one end of the recorder's body, which reveals a male USB plug. This USB Direct design eliminates the need for a USB cable (the male plug connects directly to your computer), making the device even more portable. Once connected, you can download music files, images, or documents, in effect turning the recorder into a small hard drive, or you can transfer voice recordings to your computer for storage or multimedia use.
The unit also offers built-in WOW sound enhancement to produce rich, three-dimensional audio with a nice bass component. Additional audio improvements include a user-selectable equalizer that lets you tailor the sound to your taste or environment, along with Olympus's innovative noise-canceling technology, which makes the audio even clearer by removing unwanted hiss and background noise. You can even adjust the built-in stereo microphone's recording level to meet your needs.
Every bit as important are the playback functions, which include fast (50 percent) and slow (25 percent) playback, random play, and repeat play. And should you need to identify and quickly retrieve important sound bites, all you need to do is insert an index mark and refer to it later. Additional features include a locking function, which keeps important data from being erased; an easy-to-read, backlit, full-dot LCD; and a pair of stereo headphones.

Olympus DS-4000 - Digital voice recorder - flash 32 MB Review

Olympus DS-4000 - Digital voice recorder - flash 32 MBThis is a good product and works effectively, BUT whatever you do, do NOT drop it.The battery compartment is on the corner of the bottom of the recorder. The door to this compartment is plastic and VERY FRAGILE!!!The battery is spring loaded and is kept in the compartment by the plastic door.A very tiny piece of the plastic door broke off my recorder when it was dropped and now the door won't close all the way.Because the door won't close, the battery won't stay in and it won't even charge.I sent it back to Olympus for repair. No can do.They said it was "damaged beyond repair".So a little plastic piece of a door has completely disabled my $450.00 recorder.Olympus' only suggestion...replacement.What is wrong with this picture???

Olympus 1GB Digital Voice Recorder: 604 Hours Review

Olympus 1GB Digital Voice Recorder: 604 HoursI thought I wanted a voice recorder a long time ago, while a student but I never actually bought one. If I remember correctly, I was deterred, back then, by the apparent mechanical complexity of the device, its using non-standard recording media - mini cassettes - the need to feed it batteries and its overall lack of versatility. I believe they used to be expensive too.

This is my first and voice recorder and it seems to address most of my issues back then. The Olympus VN-5000 DVR's notable features include:

- no moving parts other than the several buttons
- small
- long battery life
- no physical recording media needed other than its own physical memory
- moderately easy to learn controls
- 3 level of recording quality and, depending in the quality selected
- 20, 50 or 300 hours of recording time, depending on the selected recording quality
- voice activated recording
- variable playback speed
- date/time stamps on files
- some rudimentary file management (4 preset folders, files can be moved between folders)
- etc., etc.

Its main weakness is its not allowing for easy transfer of records files - see note at the bottom on how to do it 'the hard way'.

Overall, this model is a trade off between low price/simplicity and features/flexibility in favor of low price and simplicity. Being my fist DVR, I happen to like it this way but the more sophisticated or the more demanding users may not not appreciate its awkward file management and the fact that, at least in theory, it's impossible to get the files out of the device, into some other form of storage (but it can be done - see note below).

I am very pleased with this device. Between 4 and 5 stars, I decided on 4 because this inexpensive, 'entry level' gadget, while making recording easy, is not as good at managing and retrieving the information once recorded, especially when one stores many files.

_______________________________________
Note:

If you want to transfer your files to a computer, it can be done but it can be a time-consuming process. To do so, you need to

- Install Audacity on your machine (it's a free download).
- Plug a microphone cable into your DVR's headphone slot and the other end into your computer's microphone interface - all computers should have these wires and you can use either the 'green' or the 'pink' one.
- Set Audacity on 'record' and you simply 'play' your file.
- Test for the proper volume setting before recording a long file.
- Save your recording as a WAV or MP3 file.

It's going to take as long as it took you to make the recording but, once it's done you have a file that you can do with as you please.

Olympus DS-3400 Digital Voice Recorder (DS3400) Review

Olympus DS-3400 Digital Voice RecorderThe DS-3400 is one of Olympus' professional dictation digital recorders. At three to four times the cost of their consumer digital recorders, it is a pricey addition to the office. Is it worth it?If you are out of the office more than half of the working day, then it probably is worth it.The recorder allows you to record dictation and send it via e-mail or desktop usb link to your of your secretary's computer.Nothing out of the ordinary. However, the recorder allows you to rewind and review dictation and record over it. You can also insert a recording in a previously saved recording. This makes the cost worth it because none of the consumer recorders permit review and re-record.

On the down side, it would be nice if Olympus comes out with an accessory or firmware update that allows linking the recorder to an internet capable phone such as a Blackberry. Also, the review and cue functions need to be more like a tape recorder -- navigating through a recording can be tricky.

All-in-all:4 stars out of 5.

Remote, RS30-W Remote Control for Review

Remote, RS30-W Remote Control forMy unit functioned very well, but did not do what I expected -- to be able to start my recorder from an adjacent room (outside the sound booth). Since it's infra-red, it's line of sight, so if you want to control your recorder from more than about six or seven feet away from the device, save your money.

What I needed was a true wireless -- or radio frequency controller, so I don't have to be able to see the recorder to turn it on.

Tascam DR1 Tascam Portable Digital Recorder Review

Tascam DR1 Tascam Portable Digital RecorderI've had this DR-1 for 4 days now and I am learning about it relatively quickly. The instruction manual (on the SD card (included)) is very thorough, and straight forward. I'm no idiot, but sometimes manuals can bog you down..this one gets to the point. {Don't forget to back up that manual on your pc BEFORE you ever format the card (formatting is not necessary to use the card initially as it is empty) or its adios manual}.The playback sound is quite good, not that I have ever done any studio mix downs, but for something the size of a chubby IPod Classic it sounds good. You can slow music to 50% speed and the pitch stays accurate...as claimed. As far as weeding out vocals or instruments, unless they are on distinctly different L or R channels...that isn't gonna happen totally.

I have yet to overdub, and I see you can't OD in MP3 format (WAV only), so you best have a big gig SD card if you plan on any J Garcia 10 minute wanderings.

So, thus far, I am impressed. For under 230 USD new on Amazon...a good portable unit with some nice features, well constructed, good sound (have to use headphones, unless you connect to your PC for playback). I am not a sophisticated guitarist, but I can see this will be a good learning tool for me...because you never know how bad (or good) you were til you hear it back on a recording. LOL.

Olympus WS-320M 1 GB Digital Voice Recorder and Music Player Review

Olympus WS-320M 1 GB Digital Voice Recorder and Music PlayerMy DVR (digital voice recorder) experience has included the Sony ICD-MS515, the Olympus DS-2200 and DS-2.My main use for DVRs is PC archival of lectures and sermons.

The new WS-320M appealed to me because of its 1GB of flash memory, small size, WMA codec, and built-in USB connector. My older DS-2 is disadvantaged with only 64mb of memory and a proprietary USB connector.

This DVR is much smaller than other DVRs.It is almost half the volume and weight of the DS-2200 (similar to the DM-20).The WS-320M is constructed mostly of plastic, but it is well made and assembled with screws. There is a mechanical hold switch. The USB port cover / battery holder slides off smoothly after pressing the release button. No significant force is required to slide off the port cover or to reassemble it.There is a groove you need to line up first to reassemble the port cover. The small AAA battery cover is not attached to the DVR and can get lost. There is a hand strap hole, but no hand strap is included. The buttons, switches, and d-pad are well-made and provide a small amount of tactile feedback. The smaller size of the DVR makes it very portable but it can cause problems operating the switches for those with larger hands.Anyone used to small music players should have no problem operating the WS-320M.However, someone who regularly uses a voice recorder for dictation should probably stick to the larger professional DVRs like the Olympus DS-2200 and Sony ICD-BM1.

I started testing the WS-320M without reading the manual. It was easy to use.Button and menu operation is very logical. The LCD screen is smaller and less bright than the DS-2200 / DS-2, presumably to save battery life. The screens displays a large amount of information including folder name, time elapsed, time remaining, battery, record mode, and more, though not necessarily at the same time.A press of the OK or STOP button will change the information displayed. While recording, the screen displays a horizontal bar sound level meter.

The WS-320M uses only the Windows Media audio format codec.Other Olympus DVRs use the proprietary DSS format.I prefer the WMA format over the DSS format because the audio sounds more life-like.DSS format in SP or LP mode sounds harsh and full of compression artifacts.Recording in STHQ mode on the WS-320M with the built-in microphone produces satisfactory recordings but even better sounding recordings can be made using a high quality external microphone like the Sony ECM-DS70P or the Olympus ME51S. Overall, I liked the recordings on the WS-320M more than the recordings from my DS-2200.The DS-2200 tends to clip high volume sounds.Using a stereo dubbing / attenuator cable, I "ripped" some songs from a CD player to the WS-320M in STHQ mode. The "ripped" music sounded like FM radio quality or better. All of the voice recordings are file date-time stamped appropriately and date-time stamped internally. You can see the internal date with the program DSS Player (not included).

When I plugged the WS-320M into PC, Windows XP recognized it and installed it.There appears to be no driver available for Windows 98.A new drive appeared in the My Computer window.I was able download the recordings to the PC at about 50 MB per minute.I then uploaded some WMA format audiobook tracks to the WS-320M voice folders. The transfer rate uploading is about 26 MB per minute. This is faster than USB 1 and is comparable to many small mp3 music players.I was able to play the audiobook tracks in voice mode.

In general, the voice mode operation of the WS-320M is very similar to the operation of the DS-2200 or DS-2.

As a music player, the WS-320M is comparable to a Creative Muvo Nano / N200.The sound quality is good with a strong low end and a very low level of background hiss (only noticeable with sensitive earbuds). The volume levels range from bedtime quiet to painful.Music is transferred to the WS-320M by copying music files to the music folder or to the root. The WS-320M can handle two levels of folders (artist and albums for example).Navigation on the player is by folder and not by tags. The player uses mp3 tag information only for the screen display. This player can only play bitrates from 5 kbps to 256 kbps.It will not play 320k mp3 files.

This player has most of the functions of dedicated mp3 flash memory players. There are settings for RANDOM, REPEAT, REPEAT ONE, Play One Folder, Play All Folders, ROCK, FLAT, JAZZ, POP, User 5 band EQ, SRS WOW (surround sound / trubass). You can change the order of music tracks and delete music tracks. There is no bookmarking function and no sleep timer.

More information can be gleaned from the WS-320M user manual available for download from the Olympus website.

The WS-320M is a good player / recorder for a student. You can fit a week's worth of lectures on the recorder and still have about 500 mb left over to fill with music.I would not recommend it for a business person needing a true dictation recorder because of its small size and small controls. But for someone who wants to record meetings and seminars and listen to music, it is a good choice.

Pros:

Small size, good price benefit ratio, long battery life for a voice recorder, good construction, built-in USB connector, informative display, good quality voice recordings, WMA codec, dictation capabilities, external microphone input, date-time stamped recordings, plug and play for file/music transfers, and MP3/WMA music player with DRM support.

Cons:

Tiny controls, separate battery door (risk of loss), lesser quality built-in stereo microphone (typical of consumer level recorders), no remote control capability, no included dictation software (DSS Player Lite is available for free download), no included carry case or strap.ADDENDUM (July 13, 2006)

Upon reading the comment that the reviewer's WS-320M had firmware 1.18 and kept date and time correctly at all times, I contacted Olympus customer service and was able to obtain a warranty repair to correct the problem where my WS-320M would not keep time with the battery compartment disconnected.About ten days after shipping the recorder to Olympus, the unit was returned repaired with a note that the circuit board was replaced. My recorder now keeps the correct time.

After seven months of use, the WS-320M has held up well.It has been protected by a sheet of clear vinyl wrapped around it and still looks new.I have been very satisfied with this recorder. The recorder will even play protected audiobooks downloaded from the public library. My Ipod will not play those audiobooks.

Product Description:
Slim, attractive, and highly functional, the Olympus WS-320M digital voice recorder packs 1 GB of internal flash memory into its lightweight housing, letting you record up to 277 hours of high-quality audio in WMA format. It's ideal for recording notes or long lectures, interviewing sources for an upcoming story, or capturing spur-of-the-moment song ideas before they disappear into the air. As an added bonus, the WS-320M can store up to 266 WMA or MP3 songs for high-quality stereo playback, letting you listen to your favorite tunes between (or during) classes or while waiting in line at the DMV. All this in a tiny body that measures 1.5 inches wide by 3.73 inches tall--roughly the size of a pack of gum.
The WS-320M features five separate file folders capable of holding 199 files each, so you can organize nearly 1,000 files by subject, theme, or other categories. The WS-320M will instead record as soon as the built-in microphone picks up sound.
Perhaps the most convenient feature, however, is the built-in USB connector. To attach the WS-320M to a PC or Mac, all you need to do is remove one end of the recorder's body, which reveals a male USB plug.

Olympus VN3100PC Digital Voice Recorder Review

Olympus VN3100PC Digital Voice RecorderThis recorder is fine if you need to record notes but don't care much about the sound quality. It's strictly for utilitarian note-taking. It has 4 quality levels and only the highest (XHQ) even approaches the quality of my old Sony tape recorder. However, you can understand yourself in all modes, though I wouldn't try recording a lecture or conference in anything but the highest quality mode- voices sound like aliens speaking through long plastic tubes in the other modes.

It records in 4-bit .wav format, which is low quality. Listening with stereo headphones (not included) you'll hear the sound only in one ear. Transfer to the PC is via the included program "Digital Wave Player." I found that I couldn't convert the .wavs (which take up a lot of space on the PC if you want to save them) to .mp3s using RightClickMp3 (a freeware conversion utility not included with the recorder) without first opening the files in Windows Sound Recorder and saving as CD Quality files. This is a bit annoying, considering some other players and recorders record directly to mp3. I think the technology of these things is lagging behind the rest of the electronics market- this is the level that mp3 players were at a few years ago. Who buys a 128 MB mp3 player now for this price?

The recorder is easy and intuitive to use. The LCD screen is big enough to see clearly, but does not have a backlight. It does have an LED light between the STOP and REC buttons, which flashes green when you perform various operations. It switches to steady red when recording, and flashing red when paused during recording. It also beeps in various ways to let you know what operations you are performing (for example two fast low beeps when you stop recording, two slow low beeps when you pause recording, one high beep when you start recording). You can turn the beeps off if you want to. I like having visual and aural confirmations like that because I record outside at night.

The HOLD button is the only control on the side of the recorder besides the USB jack. This is a good feature. It functions as an on/off button. No buttons will operate with it on, but if you press some of the buttons it will show the date followed by the time briefly- a handy feature. Take HOLD off and it shows the screen again at whatever file you last had it. When changing batteries, put HOLD on and it will save all your settings and files so you don't lose anything and have to reset it all each time.

It has voice activation, though I haven't used that, index marks, a timer record function, and an alarm which will beep and play a file that you select. The speaker is in the back in the recessed upper half, which leaves a nice step for your index finger when you hold it.

Overall it has nice features, an ergonomic feel in your hand, a comparatively long record time of about 5-1/2 hours in XHQ mode, and is easy to use. Improvements that would make this a five-star item would be better recording quality and direct-to-mp3 recording. If you need really good sound quality look elsewhere. I think that for the price, this should have much better sound quality. After all, that's the main feature in a recorder.

Olympus LS-10 Linear PCM Field Recorder + Olympus Noise cancellation Microphone + 4GB SD Card + Accessory Kit Review

Olympus LS-10 Linear PCM Field Recorder + Olympus Noise cancellation Microphone + 4GB SD Card + Accessory KitImpresseive little machine in many ways.... my only complaint it the playback on it on the speakers or the ear jack in not loud enough.I called Olympus and they said this does not have large speakers. In less then quite room... let's say a classroom where there is some talking for instance, it would be hard to hear the playback clearly! This may have been a design problem form the get go!

I have an Olympus from the VN series... 3600... it plays back twice as loud.

Olympus VN-240 PC Digital PC Link Voice Recorder Review

Olympus VN-240 PC Digital PC Link Voice RecorderThis is my first digital recorder which I purchased for recording class lectures. This device is very simple to use and includes the software and connectors required to transfer the recordings onto your computer. My only gripe about this product is that it only has 4 hours of recording time on the low quality setting. Recording quality is satisfactory however I wouldn't recommend it for lecture recordings if the professor is not wearing a microphone unless you sit in the front of the class. Overall I am satisfied with this product.

Olympus WS-200S 128 MB Digital Voice Recorder Review

Olympus WS-200S 128 MB Digital Voice RecorderI recently purchased a WS-200S to replace my aging Olympus DS-2000 recorder. I had hoped to use the WS-200S to record dictation for Dragon Naturally Speaking (DNS) transcriptions. DNS (a very, very good voice recognition product) works very well with recordings made on my DS-2000, and I'd expected the same performance.

First of all, the WS-200S is a typical Olympus product: carefully designed, excellent construction, etc. It's a marvel of miniaturization, measuing less than 3.75" tall x 1.5" wide. It weighs next to nothing.

This small size comes with a price, however. There are five controls (Rec, Stop, Play, FF/Rew, Volume) along the right side (sorry, lefties!). As you can imagine, these buttons and rockers are very small. I have found it difficult to operate this recorder without looking to see which button I'm pressing.

It's unfortunate that Olympus chose WMA (Windows Media Audio) as the recording format for this recorder. Although WMA is extremely compact, it also causes considerable loss of audio detail. In fact, DNS cannot reliably transcribe a recording made at the WS-200S's default recording speed (SP).

I have to use HQ (high quality) mode for DNS transcription. The problem here is that HQ yields less than 9 hours of recording time on the WS-200S's 128 megabyte memory. I had been hoping for more usable recording time than that from 128 megs of memory.

Also, because DNS does not recognize WMA files, I have to use a conversion utility (I'm using [....] excellent "AudioConverter Studio" product for this purpose) to transform the WMA files before transcription. I fully expected this extra step, and it's more of a problem with DNS than the DS-200S, but you should be aware of it.

The WMA recordings at LP are so "lo fi" and full of noise that they're painful to listen to. In my opinion, the LP recording mode (which yields 55 hours of recording time on the WS-200S) can't be considered a viable recording option.

The SP recordings have a funny "hollow" sound (apparently caused by the WMA compression), making them sound very odd. This is true even when using a good headset microphone (Parrott VXI TalkPro Xpress).

However, the HQ recording mode is crystal-clear and gives very good results with DNS, especially when used with an external microphone.

Finally, and I know it's a trivial issue, but the built-in microphone picks up every sound generated by handling the recorder. What I mean is that, while it's recording, you have to be very careful not to tap the side of the recorder or to allow your fingers or hand to "slide" over the recorder's surface. If you do, the recorder picks up and adds very distinct (and loud!) noises to the recording. My previous Olympus recorder had much better microphone isolation than the WS-200S and I'm finding this issue to be a real problem. It's difficult, for instance, to make recordings as I walk around with this recorder in my hand because of all the "handling" noises that get added to the recording.

So, the bottom line is that I'll probably be using this recorder for meetings and interviews and not for DNS transcriptions. I really like the USB "plug" for transferring files to the computer, and am very happy with its construction and overall quality. Olympus cannot be beat in these regards. I just wish Olympus had chosen a less "lossy" recording format and had spent a bit more time on ergonomics.

With up to 55 hours recording time, a built-in stereo microphone, and a compact and slick design, the WS-200S has a lot going for it. But when you consider the recorder can also be separated from its battery unit and plugged directly into a PC's USB port - without a USB cable - for quick and convenient downloading of audio, documents, images and more, you'll also see it has a lot going for you, too.

Olympus DS-50 Digital Voice Recorder (275 Hours) Review

Olympus DS-50 Digital Voice RecorderThe manual does not specify the most important quality difference between recording in STXQ mode versus STHQ.

STXQ results in 128kbps WMA recording.
STHQ results in 64kbps WMA recording.
Both modes are 44.1KHz 16 bit.

The conclusion is that if you are recording music or otherwise want the highest quality, you must record in STXQ mode.
To achieve the best possible recording using an Olympus mic intended for this DS-50 recorder, consider ordering the ME51S mic, which is superior to the included ME53SA.

This is a fantastic recorder. But it is not the ultimate recorder for musicians. For example, see the Zoom H4 or the Olympus LS-10 Linear PCM Recorder.

If you have a Mac or otherwise want to convert the WMA files to the more universally playable MP3 format, consider downloading the EasyWMA program (or one of many other similar free or inexpensive programs). This recorder is compatible with Mac computers if you are willing to convert WMA files after transferring them to your Mac (setting USB class in the DS-50 menu to "Storage Class" allows drag-and-drop from the DS-50 to your PC). The manual does not make this compatibility clear, and might mislead you to think it is only compatible with Windows.

See also the Olympus DS-61 (2GB) and DS-40 (512MB) for basically identical recorders at different price points. The DS-40 is a great bargain for those with more limited budgets or who do not need as much recording capacity. The DS-61 is not yet available on amazon, but is available elsewhere.

Olympus VN-3200 PC Digital Voice Recorder Review

Olympus VN-3200 PC Digital Voice RecorderFirst off, this is the first digital recorder I have used, at least for productive reasons.Currently I am a student and I hate taking notes, so it came to mind that I could record all my classes on a digital recorder and save them to my computer for later reference. My classes range from 1 and a half hours to 3 hours long.

Pros:

-Inexpensive but not cheap
-Non proprietary USB to computer link
-Files are saved as WMA and computer detects device as Mass Storage for easy drag/drop, copy/paste actions
-Comes with USB cable
-Small and portable
-Able to set the Mic sensitivity to conference(High) or dictation(Low)
-Easy to read and understand screen layout
-Good built in menu options (ie: battery saving options, screen contrast, recording quality, volume)
-Good manual
-Built in Mic and Phone jacks
-Indexing
-Voice activation

Cons:

-Does not come with the two AAA batteries required to operate
-Does not come with a carrying case or lanyard
-128mb of memory (non upgradable)

I'd like to point out that this device shares the same manual with the Olympus VN-5200 and that the recording times for the VN-3200 are 8 hours 40 minutes for HQ mode, 17 hours 10 minutes for SP mode and, 54 hours 40 minutes for LP mode.

This device suits my needs but may not have the recording length appropriate for you, but overall 5 stars.

Olympus DM-10 Digital Voice Recorder and Music Player Review

Olympus DM-10 Digital Voice Recorder and Music PlayerI am going to be conducting interviews for research. I was new to the digital voice recorder buying scene and started out by buying an Olympus VN-3600. That device is OK, but has severe limitations. The most obvious one being that the lower end digital voice recorders do not transfer files to a computer. So if you want to use the space again you have to take your notes and lose the original. The other limitation that the lower-end voice recorders have is poor to unsuable recording in the long-play mode. For the 3600, 6 hours was a joke. Believe me it was completely unsuable. I knew that going in but I didn't realize how crippling not being able to transfer files to the computer would be.
Enter the DM-10. From the reviews here and across the web I decided to give it a try. I am VERY GLAD that I did. What a remarkable device. It has 3(4) recording modes and each one of them is crystal clear. I put 4 in parathensis because if you use a stero microphone it automatically records in SHQ or Super High Quality mode. As many voice recorders have this has a voice activation level so that pauses shut down the recording. This one works really well with 15 different levels. The SP mode gives you 22hours of recording! And it is usable.
I just downloaded the software and it is great. I recorded two files one in HQ mode and one in SP mode. SP and LP recordings are stored in something called DSS files whereas the HQ and SHQ are stored as WMA files. They downloaded in a flash. I also copied them to a folder and then clicked on them and they brought up the software for replay in a flash.
You can also use the DM-10 as an MP3 player. As a nice bonus, and I bought this in early June 2004, the package I got included a stero microphone. You usually get what you pay for and I would suggest if you want to have a ton of recording space and you feel that storing your recordings would be helpful, spend the money on this device. It has too many features to list but all are well-thought out and enhance its usability. The manual is well-written and will get you started in minutes. Really a superb device and worth the money.

Product Description:
The Olympus DM-10 stereo digital voice recorder and music player packs 64 MB of built-in flash memory to give you nearly 22 hours (1,340 minutes) of voice recording or a full hour of near-CD-quality music in either MP3 or WMA formats. The DM-10's compact, lightweight design and smooth, silvery finish make it an ideal travel companion. Measuring a mere 4.31 x 1.56 x 0.6 inches (H x W x D) and weighing in at a mere 3 ounces, the attractive and ergonomic DM-10 fits comfortably in the hand of the on-the-go professional or exercise enthusiast.

The DM-10 has five separate file folders capable of holding 199 files each, so you can organize nearly 1,000 files according to subjects like "work," "personal," and "to do." When recording, simply capture your high-quality voice files in either WMA or DSS (Digital Speech Standard) format, and then place the recorder in the included USB docking station to begin downloading hours of audio to a PC or Macintosh computer. Stereo voice recording is possible with an optional stereo microphone.
Alarm playback will alert you to meetings, dates, show reminders, or wake-up times. You can simply dictate reminders into the DM-10--such as "Time to pick up the kids!"--and assign a time for this message to sound, like an alarm clock's buzzer.
Built-in WOW sound enhancement produces rich bass, and three-dimensional sound, while a user-selectable five-setting equalizer lets you tailor the sound to your taste or environment. Olympus's innovative noise-canceling technology makes the sound even clearer, removing unwanted hiss and background noise.
The unit offers a built-in condenser microphone, and a 0.125-inch microphone jack gives you the option to use a high-quality external microphone (not included). A 0.125-inch earphone jack and supplied stereo earbud headphones let you monitor your files during or after recording. To suit various sound conditions, you can adjust the microphone's sensitivity. The recorder can be viewed in low-light situations, such as at a lecture hall or during presentations, thanks to its easy-to-read backlit LCD.
After capturing recordings, you can erase them or move them between folders. The DM-10 also lets you set up to 16 index marks per message, during recording and during playback. This way, you can locate specific sections of individual dictations quickly and easily. The individual files may be played back at three different speeds: normal, fast, or slow, through either the built-in speaker or the supplied earphones. In addition, with the Repeat Playback function, the DM-10 can repeatedly play back a particular user-selected section of audio recording--ideal for transcribing dictation.
The unit's Variable Control Voice Actuator (VCVA) ensures that recording begins only when sound occurs, while its security lock prevents accidental deletion of sensitive files.
The DM-10 is perfectly suited to meet varying professional needs. You can easily attach voice files to e-mails or forward them to others for transcription. The optional AS-3000 transcription kit (DSS Player Pro transcription module with foot switch and headset) can further streamline this process. The DM-10 is also compatible with most voice recognition software, including IBM's Via Voice.
What's in the Box
Voice recorder, docking station, USB cable, stereo ear bud headphones, CD-ROM, a user's manual, and warranty information.

Headset, E-102 Extended Cord Review

Headset, E-102 Extended CordI use these for digital transcription, and the sound quality is good, but after a while, the ear pieces start to cause bruise-like soreness in my outer ears.I know this is fairly unique to my ears, as iPod ear buds make me sore also, but just thought I'd throw that in just in case anyone else has the same issue. So these are good for short-term use for me, but I can't wear them more than a couple of hours of work.On the plus side, the super long cord is fabulous, as I don't feel tethered while wearing them.

Olympus CS 111 - Case for digital voice recorder - leather Review

Olympus CS 111 - Case for digital voice recorder - leatherThe case itself is nice but it's too big for the DS-30. There's a half inch gap in the case and you have to take the recorder out to power it on and use it. It would have been helpful to have better measurements.

Olympus AC Adapter for Digital and Analog Recorders - Black (A-328) Review

Olympus AC Adapter for Digital and Analog Recorders - Black (A-328)For some reason, neither Olympus nor anyone else on the net seems to post the specifications of this adapter, which replaces the original A-321 power plug.In fact, while the A-321 is big, thick, heavy, and supports only 110v, the A-328 is smaller, lighter (less than half the weight) and supports 110-240v.As the A-328 costs the same as the A-321, the choice between them seems obvious.

Here are my measurements of the two different adapters:

A-321 (110v/60c)
Height 2.5 in
Width1.625 in
Depth1.5 inches
Weight 8.5 oz

A-328 (110-240v/50-60c)
Height 2.75 in
Width1.625 in
Depth1 inch.
Weight 4 oz.

Olympus VN-4100PC - Digital voice recorder - flash 256 MB - black, silver Review

Olympus VN-4100PC - Digital voice recorder - flash 256 MB - black, silverI have 2 of these recorders they work exactly for my needs. I only wish it had a pocket clip so it wouldn't move around.

Some folks have experienced the ERR message after changing the batteries, here is the fix. Be aware it does erase all recordings to make this fix.

The ERR message can only be corrected by holding in the DISP/MENU and STOP buttons for two seconds, which results in ALL the material on the recorder being erased. It will say (FOR) for a few minutes while it is erasing everything, then will work again.
