Olympus E 98 - Headphone ( ear-bud ) Review

Olympus E 98 - HeadphoneThis earphone is a piece of junk. Do not even consider it. It was clearly not as pictured when I ordered it. Then a day later, the picture changed on Amazon -- AFTER I placed my order. Now there is not even a picture of the earpiece portion of the product.

The company is even worse. I called customer service to return the item and they told me that they were not able to refund my money because I opened the package. How was I to know if they were what I wanted if I did not open the package? What a joke. I can't even give them one star, Amazon should be ashamed to sell from this retailer.

Sony ICDCX50 Digital Voice Recorder Review

Sony ICDCX50 Digital Voice RecorderSony's Visual Recorder sits in a class by itself. After purchasing and using it, I am surprised someone else hasn't thought of this idea and marketed it. The recorder is small enough to fit in your pocket, can be operated with one hand, and it well crafted.

I purchased it for two reasons. One, the rechargable battery, either by a USB port or the included AC charger. Total charge time from a dead state is 2.5 hours. (Battery life is rated at 10.5 hours to 14.5 hours, depending on recording settings. Not shabby at all.) What was nice is the shutdown feature once the battery is fully charged, protecting the unit from becoming hot. My other reason of purchase is the 256 MB of built in flash memory. (If you can talk and create the 1000 total messages this unit can store within its 256 MB of memory, you have way too much to say.) The quality and features Sony has placed within the unit is a nice plus, and is something a concerned consumer should come to expect. (Unfortunately, no, Sony isn't paying me to patronize them.)

Once charged, I was ready to put the unit thru its paces. The internal clock and date can be set manually, or automatically when the unit is connected to a PC or laptop. The unit looks like an electric razor, due to the hood which extends and reveals the 1.2 inch LCD screen. It didn't take long to become comfortable with the controls. The recorder has a HOLD feature, that prevents the user from accidently pressing a button and destroying information.

Pressing REC, I made a test recording and played it back. The sound reproduction was good, and enhanced with the Digital Voice Up switch, that amplifies the low level and inaudible sounds to an optimal level. The rocker switch on the side that controls volume provides a very decent sound when increased. Playback can be heard from the built in speakers. Attaching a set of headphones and listening to the recording - WOW! My simple voice recording was meaty and full and rich. The internal software can hold as many as 10 folders, each folder containing up to 99 messages each. Recording time is anywhere from 11.5 hours to 95.5 hours, depending on recording setting (stereo or mono, standard play or long extended play)

The unit includes a 1.3 MP camera lens, with a fixed f4 stop. The pictures turned out clear and crisp. Nice if you have a cell phone company that nickel and dimes their customers every chance they get. Like mine. (Can you hear me now??) The camera will capture regular photos as well as close upshots. Pictures have the option of 1280 x 960 per picture image, (recording a total of 1340 images) or 640 x 480 per pixel image (recording a total of 4090 images.)

What sets this recorder apart from the rest is the ability to take a picture and add recorded commentary to it, either simultaneously, or post recording and playback.
The user of a unit such as this is hampered only by your imagination. House hunting? Meetings? Shopping for a new car? Take pictures and add comments for later study. Car accident because some nozzle hit your car? Snap pictures of the scene and add your opinions. (I could have used this years ago when a moron backed up through a toll booth and hit my 10 day old brand spanking new car. I hadn't even received the payment book yet.)

Sony includes a CD with Voice and Visual software, which enables the user to download the sound files and pictures to a PC for further editing and processing. Which brings up my only gripe, and the reason I hesitate to give Sony 5 stars.

The recorder software can only be used on Windows 98 SE and above, not Apple/Mac. They missed a whole market share on this one. Owning an Apple Powerbook, I was able to attach the unit to my laptop and drill down to the folder and view and copy the JPEG's. But the recordings are in a proprietary format, so I can't download them or listen to them without the unit itself. Second gripe: Sony only created five folders on the unit, which has a capability of 10 folders total. Why only five? Pay the overtime and create the other five. Creating the extra folders on an Apple unit will not create them visibly on the recorder, even though you can see them on the laptop.

In order to create the other five folders, I had to visit a retail store, armed with a story about researching a Windows laptop for a friend, making sure he could use his recorder for medical transcription before making a purchase. All I needed was Jean Reno suspending me a foot off the floor, lest I touch the pressure sensitive pads or reaise the temperature of the room a single degree, setting off the store's alarms and alerting the NSA of my subterfuge.

I was able to install the software, attach the recorder with the USB cable, and create the other five folders, while fending off salespersons, repeating I was only browsing. One salesman actually looked over my shoulder at the install screen while I was waiting for a lengthy .DLL to load, and walked away. When finished, I had to endure a sales pitch about one of the laptops I pretended to be interested in. Ever have to listen to a salesperson blather on about computers, imparting various flapdoodle while you nod your head and try not to blurt out the 15 years of experience you have developing software for these things? Just shove the bamboo shoots under my fingernails and get it over with!

By all means, if you want a quality unit, this is a great purchase. This was the only unit I could find that has a rechargable battery and a good sized internal flash memory. And the built in camera/voice record function. Be reminded it can be used without ever touching the software, but requires a Windows 98SE system or above to install and use the included applications. One day, Sony will get the message and get off their proprietary ivory tower.

Olympus ME 30W - Microphone Review

Olympus ME 30W - MicrophoneI bought these to record live pipe organ performances. The pipe organ has a gigantic frequency range, but these little microphones record the sound perfectly. When I listen to recordings made through these microphones and the Olympus LS-10 digital recorder, the pipe organ sounds exactly the same as hearing it live...and I should know, I've been playing that pipe organ every week for five years!

Expensive, but worth every penny.

Olympus VN-480-PC DIGTL VOICE REC ( 141725 ) Review

Olympus VN-480-PC DIGTL VOICE RECI just bought one of these .. why? .. becuase I had bought it's "little brother" .. a 16k version and loved it so much that I had to get one with more memory (this has 64k)

Contrary to the official Amazon discription .. the high quality recording time is almost 3 hours (2 hr and 57.5 min)

If you are interested in a digital voice recorder be sure to get one (like this) that can easily upload to your computer. Many units without a USB you have to connect the earphone jack to the mic in of your soundcard and play it back in 'real time' The USB transfer works great, and is fast .. the files are stored as .wav files but using 3rd party software you can burn them to a music CD or convert them to mp3 or whatever.

I recorded a meeting that was an hour and 5 min. The wav file was about 40meg.Using 3rd party software I made an mp3 about 14.5 meg. The sound quality (for voice) was really good at the high quality setting.

It also has a sound activation (commonly called VOX) feature that records only when it hears sound above a certain level. Also there is a TIMER RECORDING feature that will start recording at a specified time and length.

Olympus WS-321M 1GB Digital Recorder with Music Player Review

Olympus WS-321M 1GB Digital Recorder with Music PlayerI'm a hypnotist/hypnotherapist, and I already owned a model WS-300 that I use for making CD's for my clients and recording sessions. I thought it was great, so I ordered this as a Christmas gift for a friend.Of course I opened it to check it out.The 300 has about 9 hours of HQ recording time and the WS-321M has much more.I liked the fact that the controls were a little easier to use, so I ordered another one for myself. The built in mic is OK for recording, but you'll get much more professional recordings using a plug in mic.I use a tie clip mono mic with a stereo adapter and the sound quality is GREAT.You can buy a stereo mic but at a hight cost.
Great product but prices vary widely. The first was around $58.00 and a week later that one was about $62.00, but I saw them as high as $139.00, shop around for the best price. All in all, its a great product with great sound quality and ease of use.You may also want to check my review of the WS-300.

Olympus WS-300M - Digital voice recorder - flash 256 MB - WMA, MP3 Review

Olympus WS-300M - Digital voice recorder - flash 256 MB - WMA, MP3I currently own this model, which I bought for a much lower price at Radio Shack. But I want to start doing Podcasts and this unit does not record in the mp3 format. If you try to convert the saved file using audacity, the program asks you to send the file as raw data. I can't find any prompt for that on my menus.
I do like the easy USB connection and the sound quality, which I've only tested holding the remote mic to my mouth - not at public meetings - does have a powerful pick up.

Olympus Pearlcorder S713 Microcassette Recorder Review

Olympus Pearlcorder S713 Microcassette RecorderI've had an Olympus Pearlcorder S713 for several years now. It has many features hard to find on new recorders. It has red LED to signal recording, a 3-digit tape counter, jacks for external headphone and microphone, auto stops at end of tape. Also has dual recording speeds and voice activated recording. I don't notice any tape noise while using internal microphone. The only caveat is that it's a microcassette. But still, the sound quality is even good for recording a little singing (in my opinion).

Product Description:
Whether you're recording a class lecture, an interview, or a grocery list, the Olympus Pearlcorder S713 performs the task with gusto. Though it's not as powerful or feature packed as Olympus's line of digital voice recorders, the S713 microcassette recorder is outfitted with all the basics, including voice activation, fast playback, and multiple tape speeds. As a result, the device is a great choice for people who want reliable voice recording without all the extra bells and whistles.
The Pearlcorder S713 is compatible with standard 60- and 90-minute microcassettes, though it also offers a second speed that extends the total recording time to three hours (on a 90-minute tape). Meanwhile, the voice activation mode makes it easy to record while performing other tasks. When activated, the variable-control voice actuator waits until it hears a sound to start recording, and then shuts off during a prolonged period of silence. In the interim, users can take notes or wield a camera without missing any footage or capturing a bunch of dead air.
Users will also dig the fast playback mode, which runs 25 percent faster than regular mode. It's particularly helpful should you need to speed up a slow talker or scan the recording for a specific passage. Along the same vein, the quick review function lets you hear the footage you've just recorded. And, of course, the built-in tape counter helps you locate important audio anywhere else on the microcassette.
Other features include cue/review buttons for fast and easy message monitoring; a built-in microphone for recording anytime, anywhere; jacks for an external microphone, earphones, and an AC adapter; and a built-in dynamic speaker that produces crystal-clear playback. The Pearlcorder S713, which runs for roughly 17 hours on a pair of AA batteries, measures 2.3 by 4.8 by 1 inches (W x H x D) and is backed by a 90-day warranty.

Olympus VN-480 Digital Voice Recorder Review

Olympus VN-480 Digital Voice RecorderI pick up my VN-480PC by OLYMPUS and I begin to record. It's just that simple.

WHAT I REALLY LIKE ABOUT IT: Great Benefits!

The record quality at HQ is far more superior then what I had.

I can download it to my PC, send it via email or upload it to my website.

The Display screen is bigger, clear and easy to read.

The construct of the recorder is sturdy with a strong plexi-glass overlay on the front to offer good protection for the screen.

The batteries are locked in tight and don't move around like my old RS digital recorder.Moving batteries can blow your recording especially when you're trying to record a motivational presentation and that really smarts.

One more great thing I like about the VN-480PC is the fact that it won't allow you to erase so easily. After you press the erase button you actually have to press YES or No to erase and you even use separate buttons to do so (YESSSssss). You might think this is more cumbersome but I'll explain why this is a great feature to have below.

Why is this important...I'll give you two reasons
1. My other digital recorder did not have a separate button for erase and I think having a separate button makes it easier for you to avoid erasing on accident.

2. Because pressing one button by accident is so unforgiving. As a result of only having one button on my old digital recorder to press (I'd press it for one second to erase my current recording or I'd press it for 3 seconds to erase a whole folder worth of recordings).Well you guessed it I erased a whole 89 separate recordings of songs it took me 6 months to record because I pressed it too long.

With my new OLYMPUS VN-480PC this just can't happen. Now this erase mode allows me to walk away with peace of mind I could not ever develop with my old digital recorder.I like my VN-480PC and if you get one I hope you like yours too.

WHY DIDN'T I GIVE IT 5 STARS...One reason I did not give it 5 stars is because although the record quality on High is great (and I really mean that) the record quality on low has much to be desired. So I recommend you either record High or Medium unless you want a sound quality like old radio.

Product Description:
The advantages of digital voice recorders are numerous: superior sound, long recording times, and the convenience of built-in Flash memory (much handier than hauling around several microcassettes). Enter the affordable Olympus VN-480, which makes professional dictation as easy as pressing a button. With up to 8 hours and 13 minutes of total recording time in Long Play mode, the device is great for archiving long interviews or lectures. As an alternative, users can set the device to Standard Play (4 hours, 27 minutes) or High-Quality (2 hours, 57 minutes) modes, which provide crisper playback more suitable to recording soft voices or jotting down song ideas. The data stores on the recorder's 64 MB of Flash memory in ADPCM format.
The VN-480 is a breeze to use thanks to its straightforward thumbpad navigation, from which users can quickly access or move files (the recorder comes with three file folders, plus a schedule folder), set the alarm, or change the recording mode. Multitasking users will also delight in the voice activation function, which enables hands-free recording--a must when taking notes or otherwise using your hands. And when you just don't have the time to attend to the details on the spot, you can set the VN-480 to record automatically over a fixed span. Simply enter the start and end times and the timer function is ready to go. And best of all, the variety of functions come packed in a chassis that fits conveniently in your hand or pocket--quite unlike the bulky tape recorders of yesteryear.
Additional features include an LCD display that shows the date, time, battery life, and more; index markings that make it easy to quickly locate important audio files; a metal clip for transport; and earphone and microphone jacks for added flexibility. The VN-480 runs for 25 hours on a single pair of AAA batteries (included) and carries a one-year warranty.

Olympus (141985) 512MB Digital Voice Recorder (Model# VN-5000) Review

Olympus 512MB Digital Voice RecorderI thought I wanted a voice recorder a long time ago, while a student but I never actually bought one. If I remember correctly, I was deterred, back then, by the apparent mechanical complexity of the device, its using non-standard recording media - mini cassettes - the need to feed it batteries and its overall lack of versatility. I believe they used to be expensive too.

This is my first and voice recorder and it seems to address most of my issues back then. The Olympus VN-5000 DVR's notable features include:

- no moving parts other than the several buttons
- small
- long battery life
- no physical recording media needed other than its own physical memory
- moderately easy to learn controls
- 3 level of recording quality and, depending in the quality selected
- 20, 50 or 300 hours of recording time, depending on the selected recording quality
- voice activated recording
- variable playback speed
- date/time stamps on files
- some rudimentary file management (4 preset folders, files can be moved between folders)
- etc., etc.

Its main weakness is its not allowing for easy transfer of records files - see note at the bottom on how to do it 'the hard way'.

Overall, this model is a trade off between low price/simplicity and features/flexibility in favor of low price and simplicity. Being my fist DVR, I happen to like it this way but the more sophisticated or the more demanding users may not not appreciate its awkward file management and the fact that, at least in theory, it's impossible to get the files out of the device, into some other form of storage (but it can be done - see note below).

I am very pleased with this device. Between 4 and 5 stars, I decided on 4 because this inexpensive, 'entry level' gadget, while making recording easy, is not as good at managing and retrieving the information once recorded, especially when one stores many files.

_______________________________________
Note:

If you want to transfer your files to a computer, it can be done but it can be a time-consuming process. To do so, you need to

- Install Audacity on your machine (it's a free download).
- Plug a microphone cable into your DVR's headphone slot and the other end into your computer's microphone interface - all computers should have these wires and you can use either the 'green' or the 'pink' one.
- Set Audacity on 'record' and you simply 'play' your file.
- Test for the proper volume setting before recording a long file.
- Save your recording as a WAV or MP3 file.

It's going to take as long as it took you to make the recording but, once it's done you have a file that you can do with as you please.

Olympus VN-2000 64MB Digital Voice Recorder Review

Olympus VN-2000 64MB Digital Voice RecorderI am very impressed with this little device. It's incredibly small and light, and very easy to use.To anyone accustomed to tape machines of any vintage it (a) makes storing and accessing different recordings a breeze, and (b) seems to drain batteries only minimally ... I have used it a lot in the couple of weeks since I got it, and the gauge still shows a full battery. The built in mic is incredible, and deals equally well with one-on-one conversations, and lectures recorded from the audience. My one regret is that you can't download files to a Mac from it (or from any other Olympus machine, so far as I could discover).Still, excellent for the price.

Remanufactured Olympus VN-480-PC Digital Voice Recorder Review

Remanufactured Olympus VN-480-PC Digital Voice Recorder1. Olympus doesn't provide drivers online. Why not? It's not like they have any value if you haven't purchased the player already.

2. The VN series is evidently not compatible with Windows Vista. It won't let me reinstall the drivers.

3. The forced file hierarchy (A, B, C groups) is dumb and causes problems. Why can't I just plug it in and drag/drop your files in Windows Explorer?

4. When you speak, S's pop even when you're a couple of feet away.

I wish I had purchased another brand.

Olympus 2-hour Digital Voice Recorder with PC Interface VN-120PC Review

Olympus 2-hour Digital Voice Recorder with PC Interface VN-120PCI have 2 of these recorders and they work fine.
However since I upgraded my computer to Vista from Xp, I am not able to transfer the digital files from the recorder to my pc.

I have not been able to find any further driver info on the Olympus website. Email going to Olympus gets me an automated confirmation of receipt but never a followup answer.

Hopefully someday Olympus will come up with the Vista driver.

Olympus VN-120 Digital Voice Recorder Review

Olympus VN-120 Digital Voice RecorderI have to admit that this is the first Digital Voice Recorder I've ever owned so I am not an experienced reviewer.I did some research prior to purchasing it and pretty much decided this was the one I would start with based on price and features. While I would have preferred one a bit smaller, I'm really happy with this recorder. I have a pretty small hand and it almost fits into my palm.It does everything I need it to do.It has three "folders".I use one for making quick reminders, etc (that will be deleted later) for myself, the second for gift ideas for others, and the third for secret shopping.

I've used all three of the quality settings and prefer to use the best one as it picks up GREAT even in noisy areas. That makes the time to record less, but I don't use it for lectures or anything like that and have yet to fill it up (even when my 7-year-old nephew got his hands on it and recorded himself singing songs and telling stories during a road trip).I think in a quiet classroom you should be able to still get pretty good quality on the medium setting and prolong the time some.

I got very lucky and found the very one I wanted, clearanced out at Target when they updated the packaging for this model, so I got it for an amazing price of $20.MORE than worth the price I paid. The only thing now is that now I REALLY would like to have the PC model that plugs into your computer (VN 240 PC) so you can save your recordings. Now that my niece and nephew have played with it, I want to save some of what they said to play for them when they "grow up".However, that model runs a bit more than I was prepared to pay, so for the money, this one is awesome.

I recommend this model if you are looking for an affordable but quality digital recorder that doesn't have to be "spy sized" or connect to your PC.I'm very happy with it myself.

Olympus WS-310M 512 MB Digital Voice Recorder and Music Player Review

Olympus WS-310M 512 MB Digital Voice Recorder and Music PlayerEven though there are some GREAT features on this device, one of the main drawbacks is the microphone. It is located on the right and left sides of the recorder but there are holes for the microphone on the FRONT AND BACK. The recorder is far too thin to stand on end unless it's a perfectly level surface that doesn't move at all. Unless you want to sit there holding the recorder in your hand straight up (which is what I've been doing and don't mind), do NOT get this recorder. Laying it down on your desk or notebook puts the microphone holes in direct contact with your notebook or desk surface. Any sound you make on the desk will be picked up. Also, since it is laying down, half of the microphone is essentially covered, you will have a harder time recording the lecture. Another thing very much worth mentioning is the record time. The product description states that it can record up to 68 hours on LP. On this speed, you will not pick up anything unless you are speaking into the recorder with it mere inches from your face. I leave the recorder on its highest quality setting (HQ Stereo) at all times but I only get just under 9 hours of recording time.

With all that said, if you do hold the recorder up on end, it does record well and it is very easy to move files off the recorder and onto your computer. Despite its microphone difficulties I have decided to keep the recorder and I do use it to record all of my classes. I'm very pleased with it.

I cannot comment on its music playing abilities since I have not used it as a player.

Product Description:
Slim, attractive, and highly functional, the Olympus WS-310M digital voice recorder packs 512 MB of internal flash memory into its lightweight housing, letting you record up to 138 hours of high-quality audio in WMA format. It's ideal for recording notes or long lectures, interviewing sources for an upcoming story, or capturing spur-of-the-moment song ideas before they disappear into the air. As an added bonus, the WS-310M can store up to 130 WMA or MP3 songs for high-quality stereo playback, letting you listen to your favorite tunes between (or during) classes or while waiting in line at the DMV. All this in a tiny body that measures 1.5 inches wide by 3.73 inches tall--roughly the size of a pack of gum.
The WS-310M features five separate file folders capable of holding 199 files each, so you can organize nearly 1,000 files by subject, theme, or other categories. Users also have the choice of four recording modes: HQ, which minimizes background noise and is great for recording people with low speaking voices; LP and SP modes that offer extended recording times; and the unique Stereo HQ mode, which makes two-channel recordings. And thanks to the voice activation option, users don't need to press a single button to start recording. The WS-310M will instead record as soon as the built-in microphone picks up sound.
Perhaps the most convenient feature, however, is the built-in USB connector. To attach the WS-310M to a PC or Mac, all you need to do is remove one end of the recorder's body, which reveals a male USB plug. This USB Direct design eliminates the need for a USB cable (the male plug connects directly to your computer), making the device even more portable. Once connected, you can download music files, images, or documents, in effect turning the recorder into a small hard drive, or you can transfer voice recordings to your computer for storage or multimedia use.
The unit also offers built-in WOW sound enhancement to produce rich, three-dimensional audio with a nice bass component. Additional audio improvements include a user-selectable equalizer that lets you tailor the sound to your taste or environment, along with Olympus's innovative noise-canceling technology, which makes the audio even clearer by removing unwanted hiss and background noise. You can even adjust the built-in stereo microphone's recording level to meet your needs.
Every bit as important are the playback functions, which include fast (50 percent) and slow (25 percent) playback, random play, and repeat play. And should you need to identify and quickly retrieve important sound bites, all you need to do is insert an index mark and refer to it later. Additional features include a locking function, which keeps important data from being erased; an easy-to-read, backlit, full-dot LCD; and a pair of stereo headphones.

Olympus DS-4000 - Digital voice recorder - flash 32 MB Review

Olympus DS-4000 - Digital voice recorder - flash 32 MBThis is a good product and works effectively, BUT whatever you do, do NOT drop it.The battery compartment is on the corner of the bottom of the recorder. The door to this compartment is plastic and VERY FRAGILE!!!The battery is spring loaded and is kept in the compartment by the plastic door.A very tiny piece of the plastic door broke off my recorder when it was dropped and now the door won't close all the way.Because the door won't close, the battery won't stay in and it won't even charge.I sent it back to Olympus for repair. No can do.They said it was "damaged beyond repair".So a little plastic piece of a door has completely disabled my $450.00 recorder.Olympus' only suggestion...replacement.What is wrong with this picture???

Olympus 1GB Digital Voice Recorder: 604 Hours Review

Olympus 1GB Digital Voice Recorder: 604 HoursI thought I wanted a voice recorder a long time ago, while a student but I never actually bought one.

Olympus DS-3400 Digital Voice Recorder (DS3400) Review

Olympus DS-3400 Digital Voice RecorderThe DS-3400 is one of Olympus' professional dictation digital recorders. At three to four times the cost of their consumer digital recorders, it is a pricey addition to the office. Is it worth it?If you are out of the office more than half of the working day, then it probably is worth it.The recorder allows you to record dictation and send it via e-mail or desktop usb link to your of your secretary's computer.Nothing out of the ordinary. However, the recorder allows you to rewind and review dictation and record over it. You can also insert a recording in a previously saved recording. This makes the cost worth it because none of the consumer recorders permit review and re-record.

On the down side, it would be nice if Olympus comes out with an accessory or firmware update that allows linking the recorder to an internet capable phone such as a Blackberry. Also, the review and cue functions need to be more like a tape recorder -- navigating through a recording can be tricky.

All-in-all:4 stars out of 5.

Remote, RS30-W Remote Control for Review

Remote, RS30-W Remote Control forMy unit functioned very well, but did not do what I expected -- to be able to start my recorder from an adjacent room (outside the sound booth). Since it's infra-red, it's line of sight, so if you want to control your recorder from more than about six or seven feet away from the device, save your money.

What I needed was a true wireless -- or radio frequency controller, so I don't have to be able to see the recorder to turn it on.

Tascam DR1 Tascam Portable Digital Recorder Review

Tascam DR1 Tascam Portable Digital RecorderI've had this DR-1 for 4 days now and I am learning about it relatively quickly. The instruction manual (on the SD card (included)) is very thorough, and straight forward. I'm no idiot, but sometimes manuals can bog you down..this one gets to the point. {Don't forget to back up that manual on your pc BEFORE you ever format the card (formatting is not necessary to use the card initially as it is empty) or its adios manual}.The playback sound is quite good, not that I have ever done any studio mix downs, but for something the size of a chubby IPod Classic it sounds good. You can slow music to 50% speed and the pitch stays accurate...as claimed. As far as weeding out vocals or instruments, unless they are on distinctly different L or R channels...that isn't gonna happen totally.

I have yet to overdub, and I see you can't OD in MP3 format (WAV only), so you best have a big gig SD card if you plan on any J Garcia 10 minute wanderings.

So, thus far, I am impressed. For under 230 USD new on Amazon...a good portable unit with some nice features, well constructed, good sound (have to use headphones, unless you connect to your PC for playback). I am not a sophisticated guitarist, but I can see this will be a good learning tool for me...because you never know how bad (or good) you were til you hear it back on a recording. LOL.

Olympus 1GB Digital Voice Recorder Review

Olympus 1GB Digital Voice RecorderIt works as it says, great. However the voice to written is off and never quite gets it right. For recording it is a wonderful machine that picks up sounds from across the room without much background noise.I'd recommend this to someone who just uses the recording, but not the written part.

Olympus WS-320M 1 GB Digital Voice Recorder and Music Player Review

Olympus WS-320M 1 GB Digital Voice Recorder and Music PlayerMy DVR (digital voice recorder) experience has included the Sony ICD-MS515, the Olympus DS-2200 and DS-2.My main use for DVRs is PC archival of lectures and sermons.

The new WS-320M appealed to me because of its 1GB of flash memory, small size, WMA codec, and built-in USB connector. My older DS-2 is disadvantaged with only 64mb of memory and a proprietary USB connector.

This DVR is much smaller than other DVRs.It is almost half the volume and weight of the DS-2200 (similar to the DM-20).The WS-320M is constructed mostly of plastic, but it is well made and assembled with screws. There is a mechanical hold switch. The USB port cover / battery holder slides off smoothly after pressing the release button. No significant force is required to slide off the port cover or to reassemble it.There is a groove you need to line up first to reassemble the port cover. The small AAA battery cover is not attached to the DVR and can get lost. There is a hand strap hole, but no hand strap is included. The buttons, switches, and d-pad are well-made and provide a small amount of tactile feedback. The smaller size of the DVR makes it very portable but it can cause problems operating the switches for those with larger hands.Anyone used to small music players should have no problem operating the WS-320M.However, someone who regularly uses a voice recorder for dictation should probably stick to the larger professional DVRs like the Olympus DS-2200 and Sony ICD-BM1.

I started testing the WS-320M without reading the manual. It was easy to use.Button and menu operation is very logical. The LCD screen is smaller and less bright than the DS-2200 / DS-2, presumably to save battery life. The screens displays a large amount of information including folder name, time elapsed, time remaining, battery, record mode, and more, though not necessarily at the same time.A press of the OK or STOP button will change the information displayed. While recording, the screen displays a horizontal bar sound level meter.

The WS-320M uses only the Windows Media audio format codec.Other Olympus DVRs use the proprietary DSS format.I prefer the WMA format over the DSS format because the audio sounds more life-like.DSS format in SP or LP mode sounds harsh and full of compression artifacts.Recording in STHQ mode on the WS-320M with the built-in microphone produces satisfactory recordings but even better sounding recordings can be made using a high quality external microphone like the Sony ECM-DS70P or the Olympus ME51S. Overall, I liked the recordings on the WS-320M more than the recordings from my DS-2200.The DS-2200 tends to clip high volume sounds.Using a stereo dubbing / attenuator cable, I "ripped" some songs from a CD player to the WS-320M in STHQ mode. The "ripped" music sounded like FM radio quality or better. All of the voice recordings are file date-time stamped appropriately and date-time stamped internally. You can see the internal date with the program DSS Player (not included).

When I plugged the WS-320M into PC, Windows XP recognized it and installed it.There appears to be no driver available for Windows 98.A new drive appeared in the My Computer window.I was able download the recordings to the PC at about 50 MB per minute.I then uploaded some WMA format audiobook tracks to the WS-320M voice folders. The transfer rate uploading is about 26 MB per minute. This is faster than USB 1 and is comparable to many small mp3 music players.I was able to play the audiobook tracks in voice mode.

In general, the voice mode operation of the WS-320M is very similar to the operation of the DS-2200 or DS-2.

As a music player, the WS-320M is comparable to a Creative Muvo Nano / N200.The sound quality is good with a strong low end and a very low level of background hiss (only noticeable with sensitive earbuds). The volume levels range from bedtime quiet to painful.Music is transferred to the WS-320M by copying music files to the music folder or to the root. The WS-320M can handle two levels of folders (artist and albums for example).Navigation on the player is by folder and not by tags. The player uses mp3 tag information only for the screen display. This player can only play bitrates from 5 kbps to 256 kbps.It will not play 320k mp3 files.

This player has most of the functions of dedicated mp3 flash memory players. There are settings for RANDOM, REPEAT, REPEAT ONE, Play One Folder, Play All Folders, ROCK, FLAT, JAZZ, POP, User 5 band EQ, SRS WOW (surround sound / trubass). You can change the order of music tracks and delete music tracks. There is no bookmarking function and no sleep timer.

More information can be gleaned from the WS-320M user manual available for download from the Olympus website.

The WS-320M is a good player / recorder for a student. You can fit a week's worth of lectures on the recorder and still have about 500 mb left over to fill with music.I would not recommend it for a business person needing a true dictation recorder because of its small size and small controls. But for someone who wants to record meetings and seminars and listen to music, it is a good choice.

Pros:

Small size, good price benefit ratio, long battery life for a voice recorder, good construction, built-in USB connector, informative display, good quality voice recordings, WMA codec, dictation capabilities, external microphone input, date-time stamped recordings, plug and play for file/music transfers, and MP3/WMA music player with DRM support.

Cons:

Tiny controls, separate battery door (risk of loss), lesser quality built-in stereo microphone (typical of consumer level recorders), no remote control capability, no included dictation software (DSS Player Lite is available for free download), no included carry case or strap.ADDENDUM (July 13, 2006)

Upon reading the comment that the reviewer's WS-320M had firmware 1.18 and kept date and time correctly at all times, I contacted Olympus customer service and was able to obtain a warranty repair to correct the problem where my WS-320M would not keep time with the battery compartment disconnected.About ten days after shipping the recorder to Olympus, the unit was returned repaired with a note that the circuit board was replaced. My recorder now keeps the correct time.

After seven months of use, the WS-320M has held up well.It has been protected by a sheet of clear vinyl wrapped around it and still looks new.I have been very satisfied with this recorder. The recorder will even play protected audiobooks downloaded from the public library. My Ipod will not play those audiobooks.

Product Description:
Slim, attractive, and highly functional, the Olympus WS-320M digital voice recorder packs 1 GB of internal flash memory into its lightweight housing, letting you record up to 277 hours of high-quality audio in WMA format. It's ideal for recording notes or long lectures, interviewing sources for an upcoming story, or capturing spur-of-the-moment song ideas before they disappear into the air. As an added bonus, the WS-320M can store up to 266 WMA or MP3 songs for high-quality stereo playback, letting you listen to your favorite tunes between (or during) classes or while waiting in line at the DMV. All this in a tiny body that measures 1.5 inches wide by 3.73 inches tall--roughly the size of a pack of gum.
The WS-320M features five separate file folders capable of holding 199 files each, so you can organize nearly 1,000 files by subject, theme, or other categories. The WS-320M will instead record as soon as the built-in microphone picks up sound.
Perhaps the most convenient feature, however, is the built-in USB connector. To attach the WS-320M to a PC or Mac, all you need to do is remove one end of the recorder's body, which reveals a male USB plug.
